Mt Maculot Cuenca, Batangas

Climbing in Mt. Maculot is officially restricted by the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines (MFPI) among its member clubs and individuals due to the intense damage that climbers have caused to the mountain. However, most of Mt. Maculot is privately owned and there is a grotto on one slope that attracts a lot of devotees each year. You can climb this peak at your own option but help save it by not leaving litter and other debris on the trails and campsites. As always, tread lightly, very lightly as most of the trails are in varying degrees of disrepair and instability. The saddle campsite offers a panoramic view of Taal Volcano and lake, and several other peaks in the surrounding area can be seen as well. A steep rocky promontory can also be accessed via the saddle camp across a narrow, slippery trail that connects the two sites. The true summit is still an hour away from the saddle; beyond which, the trail traverses toward the grotto on the other side of the mountain. CAUTION : Mt. Maculot is a very accessible area, be wary about leaving your tent and other gear unattended. NEVER leave your valuables in your tent or bag!

Ride a bus headed for Lipa, Batangas then transfer to a jeep bound for Cuenca at the jeepney stop just across the Lipa bus station. Alternatively, you can take a bus bound for Lemery, Batangas and get off in Cuenca town itself. Hire a tricycle to take you to the trail head or stop-over at "Mang manuel's" store where you can hang out with other climbers, sing "videoke", take a shower, camp, or eat. From "Mang Manuel's" follow the concrete road downhill then turn right at the first corner (dirt road). Follow the trail down and up beyond a colorful house on your right. Go up the trail, past the first clearing the trail narrows then watch out for a tall coconut tree on your left, follow the fork going down towards the next junction. At the fork, follow the trail to the right (there are directional signs), going up to the grassland and then the saddle. If you have doubts about your trail finding abilities, ask "Mang Manuel" to go with you.
