Mt Makiling Los Baños, Laguna

Mt. Makiling takes its name from a mythological character known as the "diwata" Makiling (muse or fairy Makiling). The ridge line of the mountain is also likened to that of a reclining woman, as seen from the approach on the South Expressway to Calamba. The National Highschool for the Arts is nestled among the forest trees, above UP, Los Baños. You can also visit several swimming pool resorts after your climb, among which are the boy scout camp pool and the Maria Makiling Resort. Mt. Makiling has several summits, but the objective of most climbers is the highest point, peak 2, accessed through the College of Forestry trail, beyond the mud spring campsites.

Ride a bus to Calamba or Sta. Cruz but get off at the intersection to UP Campus in Los Baños. Then transfer to a jeep going to the College of Forestry (last trip would be around 6PM), or if you prefer hike from the UP campus gate. You will need to pay a minimal fee at the Center for Mountain Ecosystems outpost somewhere along the road trek. proceed to the Mud Spring campsites and opt to stay overnight there for a liesurely "day hike" the following morning, or power your way up through tropical rainforest trails, streams, and the occasional "limatik" or leeches. You will pass through several campsites on the way to peak 2 and a short steep grade (equipped with ropes) just below the summit campsite. The trail goes beyond the peak towards Sto. Tomas, Batangas. The trail on Mt. Makiling requires some strenuous effort but should not necessitate technical mountaineering skills (i.e. abseiling, etc.). The climb should take about 2-4 hours, one way.
